Reducing Operating Costs

Johnson Truck Body

The operators of commercial distribution trucks value reliability, accurate temperature control, fast pull-down and overall operating efficiency. Emerson Climate Technologies is a leader in supplying condensing units for refrigerated transport applications. We have integrated value-added components into the design and fabrication of each unit. A clear example is with Johnson Truck Body. Johnson Truck Body of Rice Lake, WI is the market leader in refrigerated delivery vehicles for local delivery of home food products.

Since 1997, we have been supplying a special transport line of condensing units to Johnson Truck Body. These condensing units are built with the latest scroll compressor technologies from Emerson Climate Technologies, Inc. and are designed to handle the rugged conditions of over-the-road trucking: everything from water and ice to salt and road debris. In 2002, they came back to us and asked if we could modify the design of their scroll units with additional valued features. They needed Emerson Climate Technologies to take on the responsibility of supplying more valued components on their product, shifting the effort from them to us. The big benefit was in helping them increase their refrigeration area capacity while reducing inventory costs. Because we took on more of the work, the OEM was able to further demonstrate its own market leadership position, bringing refrigerated solutions to its customers.

Zero Zone

Emerson Climate Technologies Integrated Products Division collaborated recently with original equipment manufacturer, Zero Zone. The result was the creation of a simple, easy-to-install condensing unit and refrigeration solution package that met the unique needs of an established, nationally-known retail chain that only recently began offering refrigerated food products.

Integrated Products created a line of evacuated and pre-charged condensing units for Zero Zone’s Hybrid Reach-In Freezers and Coolers, glass door merchandisers designed specifically for retailers that are not interested in installing complicated refrigeration racks and piping in their stores.

The benefits of the Zero Zone modular approach coupled with the Emerson condensing unit include:  refrigerated cases that can fit through 80” doorways, simple connections, top-mounted condensing units, and overall quick installation. Most importantly, skilled refrigeration contractors are not needed to install the units, simplifying logistics and reducing installation cost. The new models do not need brazing, evacuation or charging.  The connections are efficient and secure, virtually eliminating refrigeration leak concerns.  It’s a plug-and-play solution with applications for every type of food and beverage retailer.

Zero Zone’s retail customer is not a traditional source for refrigerated goods.  But recent trends in the marketplace have suggested that this type of store has an opportunity to capture a larger “share of stomach” by offering refrigerated foods like cheese, milk, eggs and deli products.

“Integrated Products really stepped up to the plate to help us make this a success,” said Steve Vock, sales manager at Zero Zone.  “Our retail customer is very pleased with the reliability and ease of installation.  They are particularly pleased that the new units have the increased facings and pack-out of a supermarket case with the versatility of a self-contained.  It is an ideal marriage of existing proven technologies that we have tweaked to make even better.  We first contacted Emerson Climate Technologies Integrated Products in October and by April we had installed our first units.”

Zero Zone has outfitted a large number of stores in 2006 and plans to install significantly more units in 2007.  In addition, this new product line of evacuated and pre-charged units has enabled Zero Zone to offer this merchandising solution to other retailers, leveraging the same design concept and unleashing the phenomenal potential of this innovative new family of Zero Zone products.

Nor-Lake

Do you buy bare compressors and assemble condensing units in-house? Read how one walk-in manufacturer discovered a better way to produce systems. Nor-Lake is a leader in the design and manufacture of walk-in coolers and freezers and is one of the most respected names in the refrigeration industry. In 2004, Nor-Lake analyzed their costs surrounding the production of condensing units. They started by listing their costs:

  1. Inventory of hundreds of individual components

  2. Managing dozens of suppliers

  3. Design change process

  4. Floor space for inventory and production

  5. Labor for kitting and handling

  6. Documentation and agency approval

  7. Training and supervision

  8. Scrap

Nor-Lake discovered that they could drastically reduce these costs and efforts by asking Emerson to take on the responsibility of supplying additional components on their product, shifting the effort from them to us. In doing so, Emerson acts as an extension of Nor-Lake’s own engineering department and improves their operational efficiencies. The big benefit was in helping Nor-Lake increase their refrigeration area capacity while reducing inventory costs. Because Emerson took on more of the work, Nor-Lake was better able to focus resources on areas of growth, profitability, and a better return on assets.

Cospolich

Cospolich, a Louisiana-based refrigeration manufacturer supplying the U.S. Military, has recently won commercial business with a new refrigerated product and has chosen to partner with Emerson Climate Technologies Integrated Products (IPD) in order to utilize IPD’s Copeland® brand refrigeration condensing units.

Based on Cospolich’s requirements, IPD designed and built a custom solution and enhanced it with value-add components. In the meantime, operations increased internal capacity which allowed them to successfully meet their customer’s delivery expectations.

Purchasing agent Danny Martin acknowledges that Cospolich is already a believer in Copeland brand products and emphasizes that “at Cospolich our main interest is in developing a working relationship with the Integrated Products Division Team – creating, if you will, an extension of our own team.”

The President of Cospolich, Mark Whitfield, believes in strengthening communications with his OEM suppliers. “I want to know that we can contact, not only our external account managers and customer service representatives, but that we can also contact the internal marketing, sales, engineering and application decision makers as well. These relationships are very important to us. I want to be able to pick up the phone and call my OEM team, whenever necessary.”

On May 18, 2007, Cospolich submitted orders for condensing units, with an aggressive timeline for Integrated Products to ship the first order by June 8th. The IPD team went to work! Exceptional communication, collaboration and product expertise strategically positioned the IPD team for a win. On June 8th, three weeks after the initial order, the first order of units shipped on time as originally scheduled. Mark Whitfield asserted that Cospolich could not have executed this project without Emerson and our quick response. “…the impact is both positive and significant…we could not have been successful with this fast paced project without you.”

Tomco

Carbon dioxide storage equipment is essential to the operation of many industrial and food processing installations. The operators of these factories count on the uninterrupted availability of CO2 for their processes. Tomco Equipment is the world’s largest manufacturer of carbon dioxide equipment. The refrigerated CO2 storage units installed by Tomco utilize condensing units from Emerson Climate Technologies. Emerson is the leader in supplying condensing units for refrigerated storage applications. We have integrated value-added components into the design and fabrication of each unit. These condensing units are built with the most reliable compressor technologies from Copeland and are designed to handle the harsh conditions of industrial installations, such as high heat and humidity. In 2005 Tomco came back to us and asked if we could modify the design of their condensing units with additional valued features. They needed Emerson Climate Technologies to take on the responsibility of supplying more valued components on their product, shifting the effort from them to us. The big benefit was in helping them increase their refrigeration area capacity while reducing inventory costs. Because we took on more of the work, the OEM was able to further demonstrate its own market leadership position, bringing industrial refrigerated solutions to its customers.
