Copeland™ Condensing Units Prepared For Ecodesign ENTR LOT1
AACHEN (GERMANY), August 27, 2015 – Emerson Climate Technologies, a business of Emerson (NYSE: EMR), strongly supports the Commission Regulation (EU) 2015/1095 dated 5th of May 2015 with regard to ecodesign requirements for condensing units. The regulation will help raising the energy efficiency level of condensing units placed on the market. All products within the Copeland condensing unit portfolio will meet the required Minimum Efficiency Performance Standards (MEPS) on the European market as of July 2016.

Ecodesign requirements imply some challenges for manufacturers just as they do for the EU member states that are legally obligated to implement and verify the measures.

Smaller condensing units (with a rated cooling capacity lower than 5kW and 2kW for medium and low temperatures respectively) will have to meet a minimum COP (coefficient of performance) (see graph below).

COP Condensing Units

Units providing larger capacities (with a rated cooling capacity from 5kW to 50kW and 2kW to 20kW for medium and low temperatures respectively) are rated on SEPR values (Seasonal Energy Performance Ratio) considering efficiency data in four different operation conditions (see graph below).

SERP Condensing Units

For condensing units intended to be charged with a refrigerant fluid with a global warming potential lower than 150, COP and SEPR values can be lower by a maximum of 15% as of July 2016 and by a maximum of 10% as of July 2018.

In addition, Copeland condensing units have succeeded in the product certification program launched by ASERCOM. Emerson Climate Technologies has been a very active participant in developing the certification program with ASERCOM. The first condensing units passed certification already in 2014. ASERCOM, the Association of European Refrigeration Component Manufacturers, is the platform for addressing scientific and technical challenges, promoting standards for performance and safety, encouraging better environmental protection, and serving the refrigeration and air conditioning industry and its customers.
