AACHEN, GERMANY, October 14, 2010— With its new ZHW compressors, Emerson Climate Technologies presents the first variable speed Copeland Scroll™ compressor with inverter, specifically developed for heat pumps. Manufacturers now have new ways of increasing efficiency – especially when the heat source is the outside air.
The heating market specified the requirements: solutions that continuously adapt the amount of heat generated to the actual heat load while maintaining very high efficiency levels. This enables further efficiency improvements – especially for air/water heat pumps. For this application the temperature variations of the heat source, the outside air, is the widest during the heating season.
One of the Largest Emerson Projects
This represented one of the greatest challenges in recent years for Emerson Climate Technologies: designing a completely new Copeland Scroll™ compressor. In addition, an inverter solution was to be developed to facilitate the economical and reliable operation of a heat pump. In order to master this tremendous undertaking in the shortest possible time, for the first time, three divisions of Emerson collaborated worldwide for months to fuse their know-how in the areas of compressors, motors, and electronics. The result will be presented for the first time to the general public at the Chillventa 2010 in Nuremberg – a real premiere: the ZHW Copeland Scroll™ compressor with inverter for variable speed operation.
The Special Features of the ZHW
This new compressor combines state-of-the art technology for a wide range of disciplines. For instance, this involves a new, brushless permanent-magnet motor that is highly efficient. This allows the compressor speed to be continuously adapted between 1800 and 7000 rpm. For the target heat pump application, the advantage is the ability to precisely provide the required heating power during the heating season. Further, monovalent operation is also possible even when the heat source is the very cold outside air. This scroll compressor features the Copeland® Enhanced Vapor Injection technology by mean of which condensation temperature of 65°C can be achieved at evaporation temperatures as low as -25°C. In fact, the maximum condensation is 68°C, presently the highest possible value in the market for compressors using the R-410A fluid. The inverter complies with all regulations regarding electromagnetic compatibility or other important guidelines for use in the building sector.
Available Starting Next Year
Emerson Climate Technologies will initially offer 2 models. The ZHW08 and the ZHW16 models address the heating power range between 2 and 16 kW. The market launch will be in spring 2011. These new variable speed scroll compressors developed for heat pumps will initially be available in the direct customer business.
