2 Door Reach-In Results
A customer approached DSN for energy efficiency assessment on their two door reach in refrigerator (fitted with manual defrost, thermostat control and a top mounted evaporator fan coil). Upon arrival at our accredited facility, the unit was fully instrumented and tested to ARI 1200/ ASHRAE72 standards, in a special controlled ambient environmental chamber. Tests revealed that the refrigerator was compliant with the standards for CEC 2005 & NRCan 2008 but not with Federal Regulations and ENERGY STAR Ver. 2. After careful review of the test data, DSN engineers proposed a series of changes to improve the performance of the refrigerator. These changes included refrigeration system optimization, condensing unit and fan modifications. As a result of these changes, DSN was able to not only meet the minimum energy standards for the unit, but it was also able to modify the unit to be ENERGY STAR compliant. The savings in energy were about 39% per 24 hour period. As evidenced by the graph, this drop qualified the unit to have an ENERGY STAR rating.
 
Prep Table Results
In another example, a customer approached DSN with a prep table that was non-compliant with 10 CFR 461 2010/2012, ENERGY STAR 2010 Version 2.1 and CEE Tier 2 requirements. DSN worked on the project and made significant improvements; some of these improvements included optimizing charge amount, switching the conventional fans, and using a higher efficiency condensing unit. In addition to achieving a total energy reduction of about 44%, DSN was able to achieve 10 CFR 461 2010/2012 and ENERGY STAR 2010 compliance.
 
Ice Machine Results
DSN was able to achieve similar results when approached about an ice machine unit with a 500 lb/day capacity. According to the CEE Energy Guidelines, the initial model was inefficient and was given a Tier 1 rating for energy efficiency. DSN Engineering made significant improvements by replacing the compressor and valve and by optimizing charge and valve setting. Using the initial model as the baseline for comparison, we can see that the new model has both increased capacity (~13%) and decreased energy consumption (~8%). This change made the model more energy efficient, earning it a CEE Tier 2 rating.
