The time before REFCON
Port Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) (see photo) has been using REFCON since 2005. Prior to that, all loaded reefers were being manually monitored twice daily for temperature records and every 4 hours for alarms and continued power connection. This created a huge drain on the resources availability to provide technical maintenance and repairs for terminal reefers and vessels calling PTP.
New extension of terminal in 2009
In 2009, PTP upgraded to version 5.5.4 with a much simpler hardware set up. This was to capture an expansion of two new reefer blocks of 980 reefer plugs to be able to connect with the REFCON application. This new set up delivered communications throughout the full terminal of more than 4,000 reefer plugs back to a main server that could provide client access to 5 different workstations on terminal. This enabled PTP to continue with the same staff levels with 20% more live reefer yard storage, preventing the requirement to employ a further 6 technicians to service the additional 980 Reefer plugs 24/7.
REFCON identify controllers which require an updated software version
After 3 months of familiarization, the PTP Reefer Team managed to implement a detailed Live Reefer controller software program to identify a large shipping line´s reefers passing through PTP without the latest power saving software uploaded into the controller. By PTP performing an upgrade to the controller software, the shipping line´s reefers were able to reduce the power consumption on chilled cargo up to 30% throughout the continued voyage after PTP, and further reduce the carbon emissions.
Special care to high cost cargo
In July 2011, PTP had tested and upgraded to REFCON version 6.2 with no changes required to the hardware. This new version has many improvements in the software to make it a more user friendly application. This has benefited PTP by being able to create their own reefer lists and filter them accordingly. This helps to identify and mark the SENS REEFER (high cost cargo) which is required by the PTP SOP to be monitored and record the operating temperatures every 4 hours. REFCON 6.2 is then set to automatically print out the data every 4 hours rather than sending technicians to the reefer in the yard to record the data.

REFCON has proven itself to be a valuable investment for the terminal with version 5.5.4 having an ROI of only 2 years. We have further plans to set up version 6.2 which will reduce paper usage with all data being stored as soft data for instant access. PTP has over 100,000 Live Reefers maintained by our team per year, you can imagine how much paper usage and administration work we can save by using REFCON instead of physically recording the Reefer data twice per day. And remember that time reduced in the yard is also important for a much safer working environment.
