Emerson Climate Technologies Celebrates 25th Anniversary of Copeland Scroll™ Compressors

Company reached 100 million production milestone this year

ST. LOUIS, November 14, 2012 – Emerson Climate Technologies, Inc., a business of Emerson (NYSE: EMR), is celebrating the 25th anniversary of Copeland Scroll™ compressor technology today, November 14. Recognized for its energy efficiency and reliability, Copeland Scroll technology has helped shape the HVACR industry since its introduction in 1987.  More than 100 million Copeland Scroll compressors have been produced worldwide since that time.

Emerson ushered in a new phase of energy efficiency for the HVACR industry with the launch of Copeland Scroll technology. By 1992, the company had produced one million Copeland Scroll compressors. Today, Emerson manufactures Copeland Scroll compressors in nine facilities on three continents. Copeland Scroll compressors are used by all the major OEM air conditioning and refrigeration system providers in the U.S. as well as many others globally.

“I am proud to have been part of the team that brought Copeland Scroll technology to market 25 years ago, and I’m confident today that no compressor technology is better prepared to meet the application, the market and the industry challenges of the future,” said Ed Purvis, Emerson Climate Technologies business leader. “We have been fortunate to work with some of the best manufacturers, distributors and contractors in the industry over the past 25 years and I thank them all for their support.”

As Emerson looks forward to the next 25 years of compressor technology and beyond, the company is working to add even greater efficiency and reliability to its scroll compressors. The Copeland Scroll brand is known for its efficient design – technology that wears in and not out – and the company continues to release new scroll platforms to meet the energy demands of today and tomorrow. For example, the Copeland Scroll K5 refrigeration compressor offers the highest energy efficiency available with lower utility bills and reduced CO2 emissions. In Asia, Copeland Scroll residential compressors are optimized for China’s operating conditions in compliance with the new RAC Energy Efficiency Regulation. Emerson’s dedicated scroll compressors for heat pump applications in Europe, Copeland Scroll Heating compressors, consume up to 70 percent less primary energy and therefore drastically reduce the pollution resulting from the use of fossil fuels. Within commercial air conditioning systems, Copeland Scroll Digital™ technology is up to 30% more efficient than traditional methods of compressor modulation.

Emerson is investing in modulating technologies that improve energy-efficiency without compromising comfort, including their latest advancement, Copeland Scroll variable speed compressor, the company’s popular Copeland Scroll UltraTech™ compressor for air conditioning and heat pumps and Copeland Scroll Digital compressor, which offers an innovative way to modulate the capacity of the compressor 10-100 percent.

The future of scroll technology also lies in compressor electronics. The launch of CoreSense™ technology last year advances Emerson’s “smart compressor” strategy of using the compressor as a sensor, which includes on-board modules for select new compressor lines. Found only in Copeland™ compressors, this electronics platform enhances compressor and system performance by sensing and interpreting information found inside the compressor, providing new levels of diagnostics, protection and communication.
