Emerson Climate Technologies Launches New Diagnostic Modules to Help Contractors More Accurately Troubleshoot Residential AC Systems

CoreSense™ Technology Uses Copeland Scroll® compressors as a sensor

ST. LOUIS, December 15, 2011 – Emerson Climate Technologies, Inc., a business of Emerson (NYSE: EMR) launched CoreSense™ Diagnostics for Copeland Scroll® compressors, new electronics modules that strengthen the Copeland Scroll brand by unlocking advanced capabilities in fixed speed and two-stage compressors. Designed to help contractors troubleshoot residential air conditioning systems, CoreSense Diagnostics modules use the compressor as a sensor to deliver active protection and diagnostic capabilities, improving overall system reliability.

“Emerson created the category of compressor electronics and we continue to deliver new products to the HVACR industry that further our smart compressor strategy,” said Brandy Powell, vice president Residential Marketing, Air Conditioning Business of Emerson Climate Technologies. “Our CoreSense Diagnostics modules monitor both the compressor and system for damaging conditions such as ‘short cycling’ and ‘locked rotor’ problems and proactively shuts down the system if it is headed down a path of failure.”

Test results at a local HVACR vocational school revealed that CoreSense Diagnostics for Copeland Scroll compressors, helped improve troubleshooting accuracy of an entry-level technician from 17 to 92 percent. Experienced technicians improved to 100 percent accuracy when assisted by CoreSense Diagnostics modules.

CoreSense Diagnostics modules give technicians insight into the system through the compressor, providing valuable information to help diagnose problems quickly and accurately, reducing costly callbacks. With active protection, homeowners can enjoy peace of mind knowing their air conditioners and heat pumps (both fixed speed and two-stage UltraTech® compressors) will work without catastrophic failure and major repairs.

CoreSense Diagnostics modules are part of Emerson’s new compressor electronics family of products. The introduction of CoreSense technology advances Emerson’s “smart compressor” strategy for using the compressor as a sensor, which includes on-board modules for select new compressor lines in air conditioning and refrigeration.  Found only in Copeland® compressors, this electronics platform enhances compressor and system performance by sensing and interpreting information found inside the compressor, providing new levels of diagnostics, protection, and communications capabilities.
