AARHUS, DENMARK, August 4, 2011 – The CMA CGM Magellan (see photo) is a part of eight new giant "Explorer" class cargo ships. The vessels are all named after history’s greatest explorers; Christophe Colomb, Marco Polo, Vasco de Gama, Amerigo Vespucci, Corte Real, La Pérouse and Zheng. The sister ships the CMA CGM Amerigo Vespucci and CMA CGM Corte Real have also recently been delivered.
The UK flagged Magellan is currently the largest vessel in CMA CGM's fleet with a maximum TEU capacity of 13,344. The vessel is 365 meters long and 51 meters wide. These dimensions speak for a coming golden age of the French CMA CGM, which is behind the creation of this new generation of container ship. These huge vessels will enable the company to strengthen its business model and improve its competitiveness and are in itself a testament to the company's ability to move forward in the current economic context.
Magellan was built in 2010 by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, South Korea and delivered late September 2010. The design of the vessel is recognizable with the superstructure located midships. This design ensures for better stability and lower trim for higher speed, when the ship is fully loaded.
As a French company, CMA CGM has made France once again a player in the strategically important global maritime shipping industry by lifting itself to number three worldwide over the past 30 years, making the CMA CGM a global player in refrigerated transport. The company has over 24,000 reefer plugs available a week on more than 100 container shipping services.
Backed by its 17,000 seafaring and shore-based employees, of which more than 4,000 in France, the Group is pursuing a growth and development strategy focused on serving its global customers more effectively. CMA CGM has therefore chosen the optimum monitoring solution of its refrigerated container, to ensure their customers the best and safest treatment for their goods.
Magellan has a capacity for 800 reefer containers, which continuously are monitored via the REFCON system installed. The REFCON monitoring system is accessible on the bridge and in the deck office and will immediately alerts if there is any problem with a reefer container. This is an important tool for the reefer electrician and allows him to ensure a rapid response in case of an alarm notification. Every reefer container in the CMA CGM fleet has a RMM modem installed, which means they are able to communicate with the REFCON system.
The vessel is operated on FAL 5 which crosses North Atlantic, Mediterranean Sea, Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. She will, as her big sister Christophe Colomb, call at the following ports: Ningbo, Shanghai, Yantian, Tanjung Pelepas, Port Kelang, Le Havre, Hamburg, Rotterdam and Zeebrugge.
The CMA CGM explorer series; Eight Giants of the Seas, a completely different dimension and with all their qualities ready to give the concept of container transport a new meaning. Be ready for them to rule the waves!
