AARHUS, DENMARK, August 23, 2013 - Chr. Hansen, a global supplier of bioscience based ingredients to the food, health and animal feed industries that ships cultures around the world, says it is reducing the risk of culture loss, improving supply chain effiency, saving money, and lowering CO2 emissions since implementing the Emerson ProAct™ Transport Monitoring system.

Transport of high-value frozen cultures between US, Denmark, Germany and France
Technical Supervisor Niels Kristen Jørgensen in front of his fleet of SuperFreezer containers all equipped with Emerson RMM+ units.
Chr. Hansen transports frozen cultures between their factories and distribution centers in so-called SuperFreezer containers, which can maintain safe, secure and reliable culture supply at the required stable -60°C temperature. The refrigerated containers are transported both on land and sea, both challenging means of transport, and in peak seasons Chr. Hansen also uses the refrigerated containers as additional storage capacity. Chr. Hansen was looking for a solution for being in full control of any irregularities which might occur during transport and storage. Further Chr. Hansen wanted to reassure their customers of the fact that they have full control of the transportation between the factories and distribution centers.
Emerson Global Monitoring Solution secures 24/7 monitoring
After thorough testing, Chr. Hansen selected and fully deployed the Emerson ProAct™ Transport monitoring solution in their fleet of reefer containers. Each SuperFreezer is equipped with the Emerson RMM+ unit, which enables each container to reports its conditions and location via the GPRS/UMTS network. Chr.Hansen automatically receives an e-mail notification in case of container alarms, prolonged power-off periods and temperature deviations. The refrigerated containers are monitored 24/7 and if technical assistance is required they will dispatch work orders for skilled persons in the region of the refrigerated container. The centralized set of data is also used to determine when a container needs to undergo a Pre Trip Inspection, so maintenance can be kept at the right level without compromising the quality of the transport. Technical Supervisor, Niels Kristen Jørgensen explains ”With the Emerson system we are instantly alerted if any problem occurs and can work in a more pro-active manner, which enables a more efficient supply chain towards our customers.”
Change to sea-freight as an environmental safe alternative to air-freight transport
The additional layer of safety provided by the Emerson monitoring system has enabled Chr. Hansen to further replace expensive air freight with cost-effective sea shipment while maintaining safe, secure and reliable culture supply. Preliminary calculations show that just one shipment in a SuperFreezer container consisting of nine tons of frozen cultures reduces CO2 emissions by as much as 202 tons compared to air freight, equal to the emission of 20 households per year. The total effect could be reductions equal to the emission from close to 600 households per year (6000 tons of CO2.)
