Next-Generation Scroll Gas Compressors Offer Expanded Flow and Pressure

Emerson Process Management announced the release of several new gas compressors and modules featuring Copeland Scroll technology. This oilfield compression technology offers significantly lower maintenance and greatly reduced environmental impact than current compression solutions, Emerson said. Copeland Scroll gas compressors are helping upstream producers maximize the economic recovery of proven oil and gas reserves, with significantly less maintenance and greenhouse gas emissions.

Responding to end-user demand for higher discharge pressure capability and increased gas flow rates, Emerson developed and released new Copeland Scroll compressors to meet expanding market needs for more flow and pressure. With new discharge pressure capability of 275 psig (19 bar), the SZV32 module can now serve applications that have been dominated by multiwww.reciprocating or screw compressors.

According to Emerson, the SZO56 module can achieve 30% higher flow, which will effectively reduce package applied cost, on a $/Mcfd basis, by 15 to 20%. Also, all scroll modules will now include encapsulated motors for increased tolerance to liquid and debris.

Since 2003, Emerson’s Copeland Scroll gas compressor technology has steadily gained acceptance in upstream oil and gas applications. Hundreds of sites across North America are using this technology for casing gas recovery, tank vapor recovery, coalbed methane and conventional gas well boosting. Copeland Scroll compression packages have been deployed for EnCana, Conoco Phillips, BP America, Husky Energy, Chesapeake, Kerr McGee, Devon Energy, Dominion, Equitable and other independent producers.

Emerson has an authorized packager network for North America and the Middle East to provide local fabrication and service. It continues to work closely with energy producers and packagers to leverage Copeland Scroll technology to reduce maintenance costs and decrease emissions. The more than 1000 compressors installed and operating in North America have logged an estimated 4 million hours of operation since the technology’s introduction to upstream oil and gas customers in 2003.

Emerson was the first to leverage its high-volume designs, manufacturing expertise and quality systems to offer the oil and gas industry a compression solution using scroll technology. Emerson said that with once-per-year maintenance for most applications, annual planned costs are US$300 to $400 in parts, requiring about one hour of labor per compressor. For a typical 30 hp (22 kW) package, this translates into an estimated $1500 to $4000 annual savings in maintenance, as compared to other types of compressors, according to Emerson. With no shaft seals, the hermetically welded compressors do not require mechanicaladjustment or periodic lubrication and have no leak or emissions points. Copeland Scroll compressors also feature ultra-low sound levels that allow them to be placed in environmentally sensitive and sound-restricted areas.
