Emerson Climate Technologies and SUTRAK Keep Broward County, Fla. Travelers Cool with All-Electric Air Conditioning Systems for Transit Buses

Bus HVAC Technology Reduces Fuel Costs, Maintenance and Emissions

ST. LOUIS, August 30, 2011 – Broward County Transit riders in South Florida are enjoying cooler, quieter rides thanks to the all-electric air conditioning systems offered by SUTRAK USA that incorporate Copeland Scroll® hermetic compressors from Emerson Climate Technologies, Inc., a business of Emerson (NYSE: EMR).

Broward County Transit Division (BCT) operates one of the largest surface bus fleets in the State of Florida. BCT’s fleet consists of 288 fixed-route buses providing over 38 million passenger trips on 36 routes. Of the 288 fixed route buses, 166 buses are equipped with roof mounted electric HVAC systems manufactured by Sutrak USA. BCT’s first purchase of the Sutrak electric air conditioning systems was in 2006 on New Flyer articulated buses.  Since 2006, BCT has purchased buses from New Flyer and NABI with the Sutrak electric units with Copeland Scroll compressors.
“The purchase of the electric cooling systems for the transit buses emphasizes the commitment of Broward County in protecting the environment and promoting energy efficient transportation,” said Harold Tutt, Transit Manager, Maintenance, Broward County Transit Division.

“Our all-electric air conditioning systems for transit buses set a new standard in performance with improved fuel economy, dramatic reductions in green house gas emissions and reduced maintenance requirements,” said Scott Imamura, VP Sales at SUTRAK USA. “The Copeland Scroll compressor is the most efficient and reliable compressor in our industry today and has played a pivotal role in our decision to launch all-electric HVAC systems for transit buses.”

The self-contained HVAC units provided by SUTRAK to transit OEMs offer transit officials both efficiency and sustainability with a system that reduces energy use by lowering the parasitic engine load while offering compressor efficiency 25 percent greater than reciprocating compressors. Also, with the low decibel levels of the Copeland Scroll compressors, noise pollution, a major issue for mass transit, is virtually eliminated.

“Copeland Scroll compressors have a tremendous reputation in the marine and truck transport industry for quick pull downs and unbeatable performance in difficult conditions. Our relationship with SUTRAK allows us to bring the same efficiencies and proven technology to transit OEMs,” said Keith Browning, vice president and general manager of North American sales, Emerson Climate Technologies. “We are already working with airports, theme parks and several municipalities to provide a sustainable solution to their transit cooling needs.”

With its shore power option, the bus HVAC system from SUTRAK helps eliminate idling and associated fuel consumption, emissions and noise. The all-electric air conditioning system featuring Copeland Scroll compressors also helps reduce maintenance requirements with high reliability of the system’s motors and compressors while reducing accidental HFC emissions.

SUTRAK is celebrating 30 years of design, innovation, and performance as a leading provider of HVAC systems for Bus, Light Rail, and Automated People Movers (APM). Over 30,000 US manufactured systems offer superior passenger comfort. Most notably, we are credited with pioneering roof mount HVAC technology and ALL ELECTRIC transit bus HVAC systems, leaving an indelible contribution to the evolution of our industry.
