Emerson Announces Next Generation 2-5 Ton Copeland Scroll™ Variable Speed Compressor for Greater Efficiency, Comfort and Reliability

St. Louis, January 20, 2014 – Emerson Climate Technologies, Inc., a business of Emerson (NYSE: EMR), announced the launch of its latest generation Copeland Scroll™ variable speed compressor and motor control drive that will enable system manufacturers to achieve industry leading 25+ Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) and 13+ Heating Seasonal Performance Factor (HSPF).  Homeowners and small businesses have experienced greater comfort and annual energy savings of up to 40% with HVAC systems featuring Copeland Scroll variable speed compressors.

“In 2011, our first generation variable speed technology created an entirely new experience for heat pump owners by enabling 20 SEER, hot air supply and industry-leading 13 HSPF. With our next generation variable speed technology, we’ve pushed the envelope even further by enabling system manufacturers to achieve industry leading performance in both heating and cooling in addition to enhanced comfort and reliability,” said Brandy Powell, vice president variable speed at Emerson Climate Technologies Air Conditioning Business. “Our goal was to ensure homes and small businesses stay comfortable and save money - regardless of the conditions outside.”

The latest Copeland Scroll variable speed compressor features an all new scroll design along with an enhanced speed range from 900-7200 RPM to allow precise building load matching and improved dehumidification. Additionally, to meet the growing demand for variable speed technology, the compressor will be offered in both air-to-air and water source variations enabling geothermal hot water heating applications.

The Copeland Scroll variable speed solution also features an all-new motor control drive with embedded CoreSense™ technology. Using active algorithms to detect and prevent compressor failure, the Emerson motor control drive takes Copeland Scroll compressor reliability to a whole new level.

“Our new motor control drive uses the compressor as a sensor to detect and prevent harmful conditions to the HVAC system,” Powell said. “We hope to eliminate many causes for unexpected repairs with this latest motor control drive technology we have taken a big step toward achieving that goal.”

The full suite of new variable speed models from Emerson are planned to launch in 2014.
