How It Works

How Scroll Compressors Work

The Copeland Scroll compressor has one scroll, or spiral, orbiting in a path defined by a matching fixed scroll. The fixed scroll is attached to the compressor body.

The orbiting scroll is coupled to the crankshaft and orbits, rather than rotates. The orbiting motion creates a series of gas pockets traveling between the two scrolls. On the outer portion of the scrolls, the pockets draw in gas, and then move into the center of the scroll, where the gas is discharged. As the gas moves into the increasingly smaller inner pockets, the temperature and pressure increase to the desired discharge pressure

Vapor Injection Technology

Vapor Injection is the latest technology to improve efficiency and reliability of the compressor as well as the ability to maintain cooling/heating capacity at severe ambient conditions. The concept of Vapor Injection can be explained using the compression theory, which states that inlet volume and outlet volume are directly related to each other. This means that the compressor capacity can be raised by increasing the volume of inlet refrigerant. In application, the vapor injection line is added inside a Copeland Scroll® compressor to directly inject vapor refrigerant into the scroll unit, making it work like a two stage compression. Higher mass flow and sub cooling in the system leads to capacity gain and better efficiency.

Benefits include:

  • Improved system performance of up to 7-10% for cooling mode and up to 30% for heating mode
  • Improved reliability due to the injection of vapor refrigerant which significantly reduces scroll temperature.

Copeland Scroll compressors have been instrumental to achieve the increased energy regulation and standards in Asia like: CSPF/HSPF in South Korea and High energy labeling in Thailand, China, Taiwan, India, etc. Copeland Scroll technology has also lead the industry in the recent R-22 phase out. For example, Copeland Scroll compressors are designed for use with the chlorine-free, environmentally friendly R-410A refrigerant to replace the use of R-22.
