Application
Two-month E-Commissioning pilot program involving ten carefully selected store locations to confirm results from an earlier project. Forty other store locations were used as a control group to provide a benchmark.
Customer
U.S. supermarket operator with more than1800 stores across the United States and Canada.
Challenge
Before implementing an E-Commissioning program in all 1800 store locations, the supermarket operator wanted to confirm the energy savings results of an earlier Emerson Climate Technologies E-Commissioning pilot program with a carefully controlled second pilot program.
A control group needed to be established, so the customer could benchmark program results. The supermarket operator also wanted to be able to determine the actual net savings easily, as well as account for any changes in weather, store operations and store sales activity.
Solution
Emerson Climate Technologies conducted a thorough E-Commissioning project that systematically examined, tested and adjusted all the energy consuming equipment in the stores involved to restore optimum operating and energy efficiency. By providing improved results and detailed information on the supermarket’s operating systems, Emerson helped the supermarket operator better measure the direct impact E-Commissioning has on energy usage in their facilities.
During the project, the customer also benefited from Emerson’s innovative process management expertise. Emerson’s E-Commissioning process is totally electronic, improving process discipline, accuracy, speed and results. The customer also had easy access to all E-Commissioning and project information and data via a secure project web site within 48 hours of it being gathered.
Upon Emerson’s completion of the project, the customer was able to verify the findings of the initial pilot program and establish E-Commissioning as an effective means for reducing energy usage in their facilities. The results clearly showed a12% average reduction in total annual electricity use, without compromising food quality, occupant comfort or customers’ shopping experience. This corresponds to average savings of 300,000 kWh per year per store, resulting in a rapid payback period of only 3 months.
Emerson also looked beyond the customer’s systems operations to identify energy saving capital projects that, if implemented, could save an estimated additional 6.7% of electric energy costs. Many of the measures would even qualify for utility rebates. Emerson also collected information on additional conditions such as lighting, lighting controls, display cases and refrigeration systems at each store. This information, while previously unknown, was now available to the supermarket operator’s decision makers, and could help them make better-informed decisions about their energy needs.
Emerson also uncovered and identified mechanical problems and maintenance practices that, if not corrected, could lead to maintenance calls and decrease the energy efficiency of the E-Commissioned facilities. Emerson also showed the supermarket operator how combining and layering monitoring and other savings maintenance methods can guarantee problems are quickly detected and corrected before they become a larger issue.
As a result of the project findings, the customer has approached Emerson Climate Technologies about E-Commissioning an additional 120 stores.
