Wild Oats Store Achieves Silver Level LEED Certification for its Boulder, Colorado Flagship Store

ST. LOUIS, January 18, 2008 – Emerson Climate Technologies announced today that Clive Samuels and Associates performed the mechanical, electrical and refrigeration system designs for the LEED certified Wild Oats pilot supermarket in Boulder, Colorado. The United States Green Building Council awarded the Boulder store the silver LEED certification level under its new Retail Pilot rating system. This store is the first supermarket and second overall store to receive such a certification.

With Clive Samuels and Associates’ highly innovative design, this Boulder store will ultimately achieve an estimated 25 percent reduction in energy usage. The store’s design makes full use of the ambient weather conditions in Boulder with an energy efficient lighting system that applies daylight harvesting. It also touts a cutting edge refrigeration system which was developed to minimize the environmental impact of both high energy usage and traditional refrigeration systems with large refrigerant charges. By minimizing refrigerant charges, as well as using alternative technology and careful attention to design, Clive Samuels and Associates reduced the amount of refrigerant used by 76 percent.
