EMERSON CLIMATE TECHNOLOGIES PAPER LOOKS TO R-410A AS KEY FUTURE REFRIGERANT FOR AIR CONDITIONING APPLICATIONS

Paper discusses refrigerant regulations, including the 2010 phase-out of HCFC refrigerants and best ways for industry to stay ahead of ever-increasing legislation

ST. LOUIS, November 16, 2007 Emerson Climate Technologies, a business of Emerson (NYSE: EMR), announced today that the company has published a white paper for the residential and commercial air conditioning industry. This paper, Refrigerants for Residential and Commercial Air Conditioning Applications, aims to address increasing regulations affecting refrigerants used in various applications and to help guide the industry through the coming 2010 phase-out of new equipment designed to work with HCFC refrigerants.

“Today, the HVAC industry is being asked to lead the efforts to reduce any potential impact that air conditioning and refrigeration systems might have on the global environment. Adopting environmentally-friendly refrigerants is an important step in terms of our responsibility as an industry steward,” said Scott Barbour, president, Emerson Climate Technologies air conditioning division. “As a leader in energy-efficient designs for compressors and other HVAC products, we believe that R-410A is the best choice for most air conditioning applications, and we are committed to helping our customers make this important transition prior to the 2010 phase-out of R-22, the predominant refrigerant used today.”

The white paper is intended to inform industry professionals, including HVAC contractors, consulting engineers and manufacturers, of the current state of the transition from HCFC refrigerants to newer, more environmentally-friendly HFC refrigerants like R-410A.

As highlighted in the white paper, the industry needs to transition from HCFCs to HFCs as soon as possible due to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requirement that new equipment using R-22 cannot be produced after 2010. Due to the limits in the Montreal Protocol, the amount of R-22 produced will be reduced by 75% in 2010, limiting the amount of refrigerant available for service needs.  R-22 for service equipment will be phased-out by 2020. All of these are motivating factors for system manufacturers and end-users to begin preparing now for the 2010 transition.
