EMERSON CLIMATE TECHNOLOGIES™ GIVES NAFEM SHOW ATTENDEES A GLIMPSE OF THE “REACH-IN OF THE FUTURE”

ST. LOUIS, September 23, 2005 – Emerson Climate Technologies, a business of Emerson (NYSE: EMR), today unveiled its “reach-in of the future” at the North American Association of Food Equipment Manufacturers (NAFEM) show. The reach-in illustrates how Emerson Climate Technologies™ products are designed to work together to increase equipment life and improve energy efficiency by more than an estimated 25 percent.

“At Emerson Climate Technologies, one of our primary initiatives is to design our products so that they can easily work together to deliver energy-efficient, reliable solutions to the end-user,” said Leland Smith, foodservice market manager of Emerson Climate Technologies. “The reach-in of the future represents an entire solution that original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) should consider when designing refrigeration systems.”

The reach-in model was designed by Emerson’s Design Services NetworkSM division, which provides testing, design and system engineering for residential and commercial air conditioning and refrigeration systems. The division, which is a California Energy Commission approved test laboratory, applied products from four other Emerson® divisions, including Copeland, Computer Process Controls, Integrated Products and Emerson Climate Technologies’ Flow Controls.

In addition to engineering consultation and field-testing from Design Services Network, the reach-in of the future includes the following components:

  • Integrated Products condensing unit: Designed for optimum performance, this unit uses a Copeland® K compressor and Emerson Climate Technologies EK Filter Drier and Hermetic Moisture Indicator. The customized, value-add design leverages a standard operating platform and a factory-charged, modular assembly.
  • Copeland K compressor: The K compressor is the most energy-efficient compressor in its size range. Its robust, semi-hermetic design makes it ideal for use in foodservice applications such as reach-in freezers, while its low compressor height allows for more storage space.
  • The Intelligent Condensate controller (ICON): The ICON reduces reach-in energy consumption by five to 10 percent by providing active management of anti-condensate heaters, with the ability to maintain a specific differential between a refrigerated case’s dew point and its frame temperature.
  • Control Link™: This utilizes patented “phase firing” compressor relay cycling algorithms to reduce downtime, protect product quality and enhance relay life to half a million cycles. An intelligent defrost algorithm also insures that the coil has dripped dry before engaging the evaporator fan. This also enhances product quality while maximizing coil efficiency and energy savings. The integrated controller replaces seven electromechanical devices, and it can be used alone or integrated with Emerson’s E2 Facility Management System for seamless, complete facility management.
  • VeriFresh wireless temperature monitoring system: An integral piece of any food-safety initiative, this wireless product-temperature monitoring system is ideal for new and retrofit applications. It also integrates easily with the E2, enabling remote accessibility and enterprise-wide management algorithms.
  • EK Filter Drier: Provides the industry’s best combination of moisture, acid and contaminant filtration and compressor protection. The EK Filter Drier is designed for easy installation with a Schraeder valve.
  • Hermetic Moisture Indicator (HMI): A patented three-step wafer dial detects moisture at three percent relative humidity, the best rate in the industry. Guaranteed leak-free operation is achieved with a corrosion resistant brass body and solid copper tube connections.
  • Thermal expansion valve: The corrosion-resistant stainless steel power element and hermetic body construction ensure long life and trouble-free operation. The compact design is sure to fit any application, with a variety of connection sizes and types available.

According to Rob Lehman, managing director of Design Services Network, the reach-in of the future exceeds guidelines set by both the Energy Policy Act and California Energy Commission. “Our field trials indicated that energy efficiency was dramatically improved,” Lehman said. “In fact, the reach-in of the future exceeded current guidelines by 28 percent. In an industry in which the average profit margin is 3.4 percent, the energy savings that can be achieved by using the technologies displayed in the reach-in of the future can be quite significant.”

Emerson Climate Technologies does not plan to manufacture the reach-in of the future itself, said Smith. “The reach-in of the future was designed to be a guide, to show the entire solution that Emerson Climate Technologies provides,” he said. “We think that both OEMs and end-users would benefit greatly from this technology.”

The reach-in of the future will be on display throughout the NAFEM show, September 23 to 25, in Anaheim, California. For more information on the reach-in of the future, as well as each of the Emerson Climate Technologies products it contains, visit EmersonClimate.com.
