EMERSON CLIMATE TECHNOLOGIES SHIPS TWO MILLION COPELAND SCROLL™ R-410A COMPRESSORS

13 SEER regulation expected to drive continued strong growth for R-410A systems in U.S. residential air conditioning

ST. LOUIS, January 23, 2006 – Emerson Climate Technologies, a business of Emerson (NYSE: EMR) today announced that the Copeland Corporation has shipped its two millionth Copeland Scroll™ compressor with the environmentally friendly HFC refrigerant R-410A.

“This means more to Copeland than just a manufacturing milestone. As the industry moves closer to the federal government’s 2010 HCFC phase-out, R-410A is the proven refrigerant of choice to replace R-22,” said Ken Monnier, vice president engineering for Copeland’s air conditioning division. "Reaching two million R-410A scroll compressors in the marketplace is a strong indicator of the refrigerant’s continued proven performance and acceptance by all major OEMs."

Copeland market data indicate R-410A is the fastest growing segment in residential air conditioning. With the 2006 13 SEER regulation, R-410A growth is expected to more than double versus 2005. According to Emerson’s recent 2005 13 SEER market survey, 73 percent of the contractors polled expect to see an increase in R-410A sales as a result of the new 13 SEER regulation. And 50 percent of the contractors are already planning to use R-410A as a way to upsell their customers.

“R-410A will be important in helping OEMs differentiate their better product lines from their entry level products”, said John Schneider, director residential marketing for Copeland’s air conditioning division. “Better value-added equipment will help contractors sell up additional value and benefits to homeowners.”

Copeland introduced the first R-410A compressor in 1996, and is currently the only compressor manufacturer offering a complete line of R-410A scrolls for residential and commercial air conditioning applications. As a result of manufacturers making significant investments in the environmentally friendly refrigerant, all major OEMs now have R-410A product lines that feature Copeland Scroll compressors.

In the ten years since the first Copeland Scroll compressors were installed with R-410A, Emerson has gathered extensive performance data from the field to demonstrate that R-410A systems equipped with scroll compressors deliver both higher efficiency and reliability than other refrigerants. The combined results from these field tests also support the following key learnings:

Field results have shown that R-410A units with Copeland Scroll compressors have nearly 30 percent lower failure rates versus existing R-22 units.

  • R-410A HVAC units can reach the industry’s highest efficiency levels. This high efficiency, coupled with the long term R-410A refrigerant, results in an overall better value over the life of the system.
  • R-410A scrolls offer sound advantages to other compressor technologies, typically operating 3 to 4 decibels quieter than comparable R-22 models.
  • An independent study reported that four out of five contractors prefer to sell R-410A to R-22 systems. The top two reasons cited for this preference were "an easier sale" (due to environmental and sound benefits) and "more profitable."
  • Despite early concerns with applying HFC refrigerants and POE lubricants, no significant issues have been reported with R-410A systems or with Copeland’s R-410A Scroll compressors.

With this proven performance, Emerson has launched their next generation, Copeland Scroll R-410A compressor with even better efficiency, enhanced reliability, improved compressor protection, and quieter operation. In fact, the next generation Copeland Scroll is the quietest compressor available in the market.

“With the 13 SEER regulation change and the 2010 phase-out of R-22, Copeland Scroll compressor technology has become an increasingly important technology of choice for OEMs and contractors”, Monnier said. “The higher charge levels and increased complexity of many new OEM systems have made Copeland Scroll the industry standard for reliability, sound and efficiency.”
