EMERSON CLIMATE TECHNOLOGIES INTRODUCES COMFORT ALERT™ DIAGNOSTICS FOR COMMERCIAL APPLICATIONS

New product offers Active Protection and additional fault codes for missing-phase and reverse-phase detection

ST. LOUIS, November 3, 2005 – Emerson Climate Technologies, a business of Emerson (NYSE: EMR), today introduced Comfort Alert™ Diagnostics for use in three-phase commercial air conditioning applications. The commercial Comfort Alert Diagnostics is an extension of the award-winning technology that has brought a new level of diagnostics, communications and improved reliability to residential heat pumps and air conditioning systems.

Introduced in 2003 as part of Emerson’s UltraTech Home Series™, Comfort Alert Diagnostics is the first technology of its kind to be used for monitoring and analyzing data on system performance. It can diagnose a variety of compressor and system problems, guiding technicians quickly and accurately to the root cause of a problem and improving diagnostic accuracy of service personnel by as much as 60 percent.

“Comfort Alert Diagnostics is a powerful device that helps technicians improve their troubleshooting accuracy and reduces the number of possible callbacks that a contractor must make,” said Karl Zellmer, vice president of air conditioning sales. “The three-phase commercial product delivers the same great reliability and protection that our customers have come to expect from the residential product, with distinctive new features that have been specifically designed with commercial systems – and their end-users – in mind. As the value of diagnostics continues to increase in the industry, it made sense that the next evolution of Comfort Alert Diagnostics would be for commercial applications.”

Like the residential offering, commercial Comfort Alert Diagnostics utilizes the scroll compressor as a sensor to help diagnose system problems. The commercial module also provides an optional Active Protection feature that locks the compressor out during potentially harmful system conditions. At system start-up, commercial Comfort Alert protects the compressor from damage due to miswiring, which results in missing-phase or reverse-phase conditions, by locking out the compressor until the wiring has been corrected.

During system operation, Active Protection also protects the compressor from repeat high- or low-pressure cutouts, which could be caused by a blocked condenser or a loss of refrigerant charge. When a consecutive pattern of these events occurs, the compressor is locked out, preventing compressor and system damage. Also, because the compressor is locked out automatically during these conditions, commercial Comfort Alert can protect the compressor even over a weekend or a long holiday, when no one is available to notice the reduced cooling caused by common system problems. A built-in anti-short-cycling feature also prevents continuous start/stop situations, which can reduce the useful life of the compressor.

Currently, there are more than 100,000 Comfort Alert Diagnostics installed in residential cooling systems, including systems manufactured by Armstrong, Lennox, Nordyne, Rheem and York. Samples of the commercial Comfort Alert are currently available upon request, with product shipment in January. For more information on Comfort Alert Diagnostics, visit EmersonClimateContractor.com.
