EMERSON CLIMATE TECHNOLOGIES™ INTRODUCES COMFORTPLUS™ ZONING SYSTEM FROM WHITE-RODGERS

ST. LOUIS, January 13, 2005 – Emerson Climate Technologies™, a business of Emerson (NYSE: EMR) today introduced its White-Rodgers ComfortPlus™ Zoning System at the 2005 International Builders Show, January 13-16 in Orlando, Florida. The system creates separate comfort zones throughout the home using one heating and cooling system.

“Maintaining consistent temperatures throughout the house can be challenging with one system and one centrally located thermostat,” said Ron Miles, vice president of sales and marketing – Distribution. “The White-Rodgers ComfortPlus Zoning System eliminates these temperature fluctuations by providing conditioned air only where it is needed. In doing so, the zoning system helps homeowners to feel more comfortable and increase the energy efficiency of their home.”

Similar zoning technology has been used for years in commercial building applications and has been growing in popularity among homeowners in recent years. The ComfortPlus system combines a separate programmable thermostat for as many zones as needed, as well as a central control panel, providing homeowners with complete temperature control and consistency in each zone while improving energy efficiency. The system delivers conditioned air to the specific zone that is calling for it, rather than to areas that are not in use. Because the heating and cooling system is not “overworking” to keep each person comfortable, the HVAC system will run less and save more energy.

The ComfortPlus Zoning System is ideal not only for new HVAC system installation and retrofits, but also for heat pump applications. According to Miles, the energy efficiency of zoning can help homeowners using a heat pump control their energy costs during cold winter months. “Heat pumps are very effective during warmer weather months, but they can be quite costly to operate on cold weather days, because they require a back-up heating source to supplement the compressor when temperatures are very low. A zoning system allows homeowners to heat only the areas they use most often; and since only one or two zones may be calling for heat at any given time, the need for supplemental heat is reduced, providing substantial energy savings.”

Zoning also presents an opportunity to downsize the HVAC system. Although the home may have three or four separate zones, typically only one or two zones will call for cooling or heat at any given time. In these situations, the next smaller size system can be recommended. The savings from purchasing a smaller system can be redirected into higher efficiency systems to further increase energy efficiency.
