Building heating and cooling systems account for approximately 1/3 of the global yearly energy consumption and therefore account for a large part of the CO2 emissions which affects global warming. For some applications, Energy Efficiency at full load (EER) is not an adequate index to rank the real energy consumption of air conditioning and heat pump equipments. The energy consumption of an air conditioning or heat pump unit is largely weather dependent. Even more, units are often selected to cover the most critical period of the year, in terms of cooling and/or heating capacity, and therefore they will be over-dimensioned for most of the time. As a consequence the air conditioning or heating equipment will run at full load for a very small percentage of its total running time, the rest of which will be at part-load operations. Emerson Climate Technologies provides different ways of modulation in order to make more efficient variable capacity air conditioning, liquid chiller packages and heat pumps. Continuous or step control of the compressor can more closely match the varying load, thus improving system efficiency.
